I currently prefer to write it in Delphi since it will speed up development time. Anyway, there is still a few months of reflexion before this port will be started. Check to make sure that you have system("PAUSED"); just before return 0. It
should be there as part of the template for new source code though.

You have not allocated any memory space and assign it to the pointers.
Hint: Read about malloc() or calloc() and free().

I am trying to pass a adjusted string pointer back to original function and
I am not able to read it, I am able to send it ok, and I can manipulate it
fine !!! the problem is when I try to work with it after it has been
changed(back in the original function) it looks as if their is nothing
their?
the code is below
#include <stdio.h>
#include <string.h>
#include <stdlib.h>
void token(char *,char *,char *);
int main()
{
char s_phone[18],*area,*number;
double dnumber;
int darea;
token(s_phone,area,number);
//puts(area);
//dnumber = atol(number); // converts string to long
//darea = atoi(area); // converts string to int
return 0;
}
/****************************************************************
* Function to token out the parts of the phone number **
***************************************************************/
void token(char *phoneptr,char *areaptr,char *numberptr)

Hello, I am trying to work an assignment for school, and I am having trouble
copying part of a string to another string. the string is a area code that
includes the () and I am trying to get numbers only from it so I can turn
them into a int. The code I have tried is below. temp currently holds the
areacode withe the ().
Any input would be greatly appriceated.

The function itoa is available in C, but I could not readily find a
reference. Maybe it's not ANSI standard. You use it like this:
itoa (some_int, c_array, Decimal);
where
some_int is an integer,
c_array is a character array, and
Decimal is a format indicator.
Of course, you can make up your own function to do this, too.

Subject: illegal operation in while loop
All of a sudden, I started getting an "illegal operation" in a while loop.
I cut everything out of the loop, but I still get the error. The pertinent
code is shown below. Any ideas? I have used the same input file from the
start.
If I change "input_file.getline(buffer, 200, '\t')" to
"input_file.get(c)" then the program does not encounter an error.
Thanks, Alan
char *buffer = "";
char c;
ifstream input_file ("test_tab_win.txt");
while (input_file.getline(buffer, 200, '\t'))

Thanks for the suggestions. Vectors are exactly what I need.

From what I saw of what you plan to do I would recommend using STL vectors.
They are almost exactly like arrays except they can grow as needed to hold
as much as your ram will allow. To find out more about vectors (And the rest
of the standard C++ template library) check out these websites..

They are almost exactly like arrays except they can grow as needed to hold as much as your ram will allow. To find out more about vectors (And the rest of the standard C++ template library) check out these websites.. http://www.ccd.bnl.gov/bcf/cluster/pgi/pgC++_lib/stdlib.htm http://www.sgi.com/Technology/STL/ You can also do a search for "STL tutorial" on your favorite search engine and probably come up with something Chad Simmons _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com |

Dee,
I know that I should use exceptions. I am learning C++ on a =
part-time basis (by trying some programming] and have not gotten to that =
yet. I will in time. Someone else on the list gave me the new syntax =
I was using. Now I know why I was confused.
I think my original intent may have been lost in the past =
responses to my unclear inquiry. The situation I have is that I do not =
know the size of the array of a structure (an integer and several =
strings constitute one entry) I am reading from a file. Right now I =
read the file just to count the entries and then I declare the array, =
once I know its size. I wanted to be able to add another element of the =
array as I go. I also keep the entries in the order in which I read =
them, and I use another array to point to them in sorted order.
Should I even be using arrays? If so, is what I described a =
"dynamic array" (expanding the size of the array as needed)? Does =
size_of_entry mean I have to declare some maximum size? If so, what am =
I saving by using new --- stack vs. heap space?
=
Thanks, Alan (newbie)

There are several problems with your code, firstly the syntax of line
containing the new operator is wrong, correctly it would bee =20
int *entry_var =3D new int[size_of_entry];=20
=20

Hello ! Yes, some bugs may occurs on version 4.0 and 4.01. As you may know Dev-C++ (and Dev-Pascal) will be rewrote in a couple months, and the IDE will now work with tab sheets instead of MDI windows for editing source files (the MDI thing under Windows is quite buggy and not powerful at all). The IDE will also be ported to Linux, as it is a really more stable system than Windows, and a very powerful platform to develop on. But this will need a lot of work to have a stable release of this new version, so don't expect to see something usable until 3-6 months :-( Greetings, Colin ----- Original Message ----- From: A. While working in DEVCPP (compiling all my source files) I ran into the message that you may find in the attached file. |
