Thanks for the suggestions, all. As far as I know, Macports doesn't have a version of visual - I gather from various trac comments that there was a lack of interest. Macports (which is where I get my Python) does have (almost?) all of visual's dependencies, so compiling by hand shouldn't be too much of a pain.
